FAQ

How do I order a custom commission?

Simply visit my Contact page and send me a message.  Include a few photos of your subject, the size you are interested in, and any ideas you have for the artwork.  I'll respond to discuss your vision, availability, and next steps.

What subjects do you paint?

I create original artwork of:

  • Dogs and other pets
  • Horses
  • People
  • Wildlife
  • Homes and architecture (loosely)
  • Landscapes (loosely)
  • Special places and meaningful memories

If you have something unique in mind, I'd love to hear about it.

What mediums do you work in?

I offer commissions in:

  • Watercolor
  • Oil
  • Acrylic
  • Graphite
  • Colored Pencil
  • Ink
  • Alcohol Marker

Each medium creates a different look and feel.  If you are unsure which is best for your project, I'm happy to help you decide.

How much does a custom portrait cost?

Pricing depends on the size, medium, number of subjects, and level of detail.

Please visit my pricing page for current commission rates.

How long will my commission take?

Completion time varies depending on my current commission schedule and the complexity of your piece.

Most commissions are completed within a 4-8 week range, although larger or highly detailed works may require additional time.

Do you require a deposit?

Yes.

A 50% non-refundable deposit is required to reserve your place on my commission schedule.  The remaining balance is due before your artwork is shipped or delivered. There is an additional fee for shipping costs plus tax.

Can you combine multiple photos?

Absolutely!

If your favorite photos don't include everyone together, or your pet simply won't cooperate, I can combine several reference photos into one cohesive composition whenever possible.

What kind of photos should I send?

The better the reference photo, the better the artwork.

For best results:

  • High-resolution images
  • Natural lighting
  • Sharp focus on the eyes
  • Multiple photos from different angles
  • Close-up facial expressions
  • Good lighting

If you are unsure, send several photos and I'll help you choose the best one.

Can you remove collars, leashes, or background distractions?

Yes.

Minor edits such as removing leashes, collars, background clutter, or combining references can often be done at not additional charge.

More complex edits will be discussed before work begins.

Will I see the artwork before it is finished?

Yes.

I will share progress photos throughout the painting process so you can enjoy watching your artwork come to life.

Can I request changes?

To ensure each piece of artwork reflects my artistic style and vision, I do not offer revisions once the artwork has begun.

Before I begin, we will discuss your ideas, preferred size, medium, and the reference photos you will provide so we are both confident in the direction of the artwork.

Please take time to select the photos you love most, as they will serve as the foundation for your one-of-a-kind original piece.

My goal is to create a timeless piece of fine art that you will treasure for years to come.

Can I change my reference photo after you have started?

Because every commission is created by hand, reference photos cannot be changed once work has begun.

Please carefully review the images you send before your commission starts.  If you are unsure which photos are best, I am happy to help you choose before I begin your piece.

Do you ship artwork?

Yes.

Original artwork is carefully packaged and shipped fully insured within the United States.  Shipping charges are calculated separately unless otherwise noted.

Do you ship internationally?

Please contact me before placing an international commission so we can discuss shipping options and costs.

Do you sell prints?

Yes.

Select original artworks are available as fine art prints (Giclee prints). Availability varies by piece.

Are gift certificates available?

Yes.

Gift certificate make a wonderful gift for birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, memorials, or any special occasion.

Can you paint memorial portraits?

Absolutely.

It is an honor to create memorial portraits that celebrate the life and love shared with a cherished companion.  These are among the most meaningful commissions I create.

Do you frame the artwork?

Artwork is typically sold unframed unless otherwise specified.

Professional framing is available as an upgrade for an additional charge.  I will happily help you choose a frame that complements your artwork for your home and provide a quote.

Who owns the copyright to the artwork?

The artist retains the copyright to all original artwork.  Commissioned artwork is intended for personal display and enjoyment.  Commercial use or reproduction requires written permission.

May I share my painting on social media?

Absolutely!  I love seeing your artwork in its new home.  Please tag me when you share it.

Will you share my commission online?

Unless you request otherwise, I may share completed artwork on my website and social media as part of my portfolio.  If your commission is intended as a surprise gift or you prefer it remain private, simply let me know.

How do I care for my artwork?

Keep your artwork out of direct sunlight and away from excessive moisture.  Watercolors should be framed behind UV-protective glass whenever possible.  Proper care will help preserve your artwork for generations.

I still have questions.

I would love to hear from you!  Please visit my Contact page or send me an email, and I will be happy to help!
